Punishments
Handed Out
Ten
minutes from the end of the 2006 World Cup final, Zinedine Zidane and Marco
Materazzi exchanged words as the two walked upfield. Zidane appeared to be
walking away from the Italian, but the turned, lowered his head and butted Materazzi
in chest, knocking him to the ground. Zidane was sent off. Materazzi was hurt
but was able to play on, and Italy went on to win their fourth World Cup, 5-3
on penalties after a 1-1 extra-time draw.
Zidane
had to do community service as punishment for the head butt. The French player,
voted the best player in the championship, was originally fined S6,000 by FIFA
and given a three-match suspension. However, the suspension could not be
applied since Zidane retired from football immediately after the game, so he
agreed to work with children instead. Materazzi was suspended for two games and
fined S4,000.
Zidane
said that he had attacked Materazzi because of his insults to members of his
family. FIFA said that Materazzi had been suspended for repeatedly provoking
Zidane.
Both
players apologised to FIFA for their inappropriate behavior and expressed their
regret at the incident. In an appearance on French television, Zidane also
apologised for setting a bad example to younger players.
